Does Twinings Green Tea Have Caffeine?

Last reviewed November 2, 2026

Quick answer

Yes. Twinings green tea has caffeine, so it isn't caffeine free. Twinings' US site lists 19 to 45 mg per tea bag in a 7 oz (200 ml) serving, and its UK site says about 30 to 40 mg per cup. Twinings also sells a decaf green tea, which still has a small amount.

All true tea comes from the Camellia sinensis plant, which contains caffeine naturally. Twinings green tea is no exception. Only herbal blends such as peppermint and chamomile are naturally caffeine free, because they don’t come from that plant.

How much caffeine is in Twinings green tea?

Twinings publishes ranges rather than one number, and the figure depends on which Twinings site you read.

Where it’s published What it covers Serving Caffeine
Twinings US FAQ Green tea 1 tea bag in 200 ml (7 oz) 19 to 45 mg
Twinings UK green tea article Twinings green tea 200 ml cup About 30 to 40 mg
Twinings UK FAQ Black, green, white or oolong tea 200 ml brewed cup 30 to 50 mg

If you buy your tea in the US, use the first row. Twinings doesn’t explain why the US and UK figures differ, so we won’t guess.

None of these numbers is a lab result for a particular box. Twinings UK says it hasn’t analyzed the exact caffeine content of each product, and the US FAQ calls its values guidance only. We found no separate figure for Pure Green, so the ranges above are the best guide. If your box lists a caffeine figure, go with that.

How does that compare with other drinks?

The table below uses Twinings’ own US range and the FDA’s typical figures. Note the different serving sizes.

Drink Serving Caffeine
Twinings green tea (US figure) 7 oz 19 to 45 mg
Green tea 12 oz 37 mg
Black tea 12 oz 71 mg
Regular brewed coffee 12 oz 113 to 247 mg

A bottled sweet tea can have far less. AriZona Green Tea lists 8 to 10 mg per 12 oz.

Why does the amount vary?

Twinings says caffeine changes with how and where the tea plant is grown, including the harvest season, soil and temperature. It also varies with the blend, the amount of tea in the bag, the country of origin and how long you steep.

Steep time is the part you control. Twinings says a longer steep extracts more caffeine, and it suggests 2 minutes for green tea. It also says cup size or the amount of water doesn’t affect the caffeine content.

Is Twinings green tea caffeine free?

No. Regular Twinings green tea has caffeine, including the pure green variety. Even the decaf isn’t fully caffeine free.

Does Twinings make a decaf green tea?

Yes. Twinings USA lists Green Decaf, and its only listed ingredient is decaffeinated green tea. Twinings UK lists Pure Green Decaffeinated.

Here’s what Twinings says about the caffeine left behind:

  • US FAQ: It isn’t possible to remove all the caffeine, and decaf teas keep residual amounts of “less than 0.4% per 200ml cup.” It gives no figure in mg.
  • UK FAQ: Its decaf teas have less than 0.1% caffeine in the dry leaf, against 2 to 5% in regular black tea. That works out to about 3 mg in a typical decaf tea bag.

Those decaf figures cover Twinings’ decaf teas in general, not the green tea alone. Neither FAQ names the method’s solvent. Both say only that moistened tea is mixed with a substance that removes the caffeine and then evaporates as the tea dries. If you want a brand that names its process, see how Bigelow decaffeinates its green tea.

How much is too much?

For most adults, the FDA has cited 400 mg of caffeine a day as an amount not generally associated with negative effects, and Twinings UK gives the same figure. The FDA lists signs of too much caffeine, including headache, jitters, anxiety and sleep problems, and says to talk with your health care professional if you have them.

  • Pregnancy: The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health says caffeine shouldn’t exceed moderate levels. Ask your healthcare provider about your limit.
  • Medication: Green tea at high doses can lower blood levels of the blood pressure drug nadolol. Check with your pharmacist if you drink a lot of it.
  • Avoiding caffeine fully: Choose an herbal tea, since decaf still has a little.
